Mary Jean Gorse, DVM

Diplomate, American College of Veterinary Surgeons

Badge

Dr. Mary Jean Gorse knew at a very early age that she wanted to be a veterinarian; however, she never dreamed that she would build one of the largest veterinary referral and emergency centers in the Midwest. Dr. Gorse opened Veterinary Specialty Services in June of 1994 and was joined two years later by Dr. Mark Anderson who shared her vision of a multi-specialty referral only practice where the specialists would work in collaboration with and support of primary care veterinarians throughout Missouri and surrounding states to diagnose and treat complex, challenging, and often life-threatening pet health problems. Once that mission was accomplished with specialty care provided in Cardiology, Emergency & Critical Care, Internal Medicine, Neurology, Oncology, Radiology and Surgery, Drs. Gorse and Anderson augmented these services by adding an after-hours emergency center.
A Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons, Dr. Gorse's specialty services include thoracic, aural, gastrointestinal and orthopedic surgeries as well as total hip replacements and minimally invasive surgeries, such as laparoscopy, thoracoscopy and arthroscopy. Her special interests include thoracic surgery, surgical oncology, wound management and reconstructive surgery.
Dr. Gorse received her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine. After concluding an internship at Oklahoma State University College of Veterinary Medicine, Dr. Gorse completed her residency at the University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine, concurrently earning a Master of Science degree. Before founding VSS, Dr. Gorse gained extensive surgical experience at referral practices in Dearborn Heights, MI and in Bridgeton, MO.
